According to Dave, "Marv Wolfman and I decided to do a two-part tribute to an old favorite strip of ours, BLACKHAWK, and run it in MARVEL FANFARE. The title was SKYWOLF, and it featured four two-fisted hotshot pilots operating from a submarine slung underneath a rustbucket fishing trawler (YES!). They flew modified Chance Vought F5U-1 'Flying Flapjacks'. We equipped our Flapjacks with jet engines, which the originals didn't have. What I'm offering are two pieces of original art: a character sheet featuring the four lead characters, and my first rendering of a Skywolf Flapjack in full livery".
I think Dave might have been mis-remembering slightly as this was drawn in 1975 and it didn't run in Marvel Fanfare until 1984 (issues #16 and 17). Based on the different art style between the two issues, I'm guessing that the first was drawn in the 70's (possibly intended for Marvel Premiere) and that the second part was completed for Marvel Fanfare in 1984. |
